YAML multi-line strings

The pipe, the greater-than sign and the "chomping" indicators, once and for all.

yaml

  First line.
  Second line.

  All of this becomes
  one long line.

  This is a second paragraph.

Both end with a single newline. Add - to strip it and + to keep all trailing newlines:

yaml
command: |-
echo "no newline at the end"

Quoting is only needed for plain scalars that YAML would otherwise misread: on, yes and no become booleans in old parsers, 2026-10-16 becomes a date, and anything with : in it or starting with #, *, &, [ or { needs quotes. That is why publishedAt in my front matter is always in quotes.
